 Profile

Yes, this is what a Speech-Language Pathologist looks like! I served in the United States Navy, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1980. My military experience helped me build rapport with the service men and women I treated as a Speech-Language Pathologist at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, early in my career. I also raised 5 children and a husband, each with their own special needs.

I've been treating patients for over 15 years. I received a B.A. in Communication Disorders from Eastern Washington University in 2004, and a M.A. in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences from the University of Minnesota in 2006. During that time, I provided services under direct supervision, as a “student clinician, and graduate-student clinician.” I completed my Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) in 2007 and received my Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

I opened this private practice in 2012 after several years with the Courage Center at Home Program, where I developed a special interest in aphasia and the cognitive–linguistic deficits and swallowing problems that result from Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This special population frequently has multiple, medical diagnoses and highly complex communication needs requiring skilled speech therapy services.

Brain injury is a chronic medical condition frequently requiring assistive technology (AT) and a multi–modality therapy approach. Current research is advancing the recognition of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) as well as post-concussion syndrome and for much needed, longer-term communication rehabilitation.

No service model provides more personalized and relevant care to clients and their families than the home and community model, which is the foundation of my private practice. This is where skills learned in acute and semi-acute settings can be effectively applied to everyday life situations with both familiar and unfamiliar communication partners. Unfortunately, this transition is not automatic.

The unique services I provide help clients identify and use meaningful communication at home and in the community. I facilitate practical application of skills learned, through massed practice opportunities via direct contact and home program development. If needed, I am able to evaluate, provide recommendation and documentation for acquiring an augmentative, alternative communication (AAC) system.

Speech rehabilitation requires feedback during everyday activities, and feedback is essential for generalization.  Everyday activities provide a much more accurate picture of a person's level of function, than a paper pencil tests in a quiet clinic setting.

Together, we can work on communicating with the people in your life (family, clergy, local businesses, on the phone or online).  Together, we can create therapy goals that are truly functional, focused, and specific to your culture and customs.

The list of potential therapy targets is completely up to YOU!

If you or your loved one is motivated and interested in truly individualized speech therapy services (Your Goals, Your Needs, Your Way), call me. I will partner with you to reach your goals. Research shows that recovery continues across the life-span.

I am confident that although life may not be the same, it can be better.
